Midnight Mansion works with a lot of creative folks, and we try to structure things so that the people who make interesting things can continue to own and build on their work :) Artists, engineers, designers, and collaborators are encouraged to retain ownership of the creative work they produce, while allowing Midnight Mansion to use that work inside our venues and experiences.
If you're contracted to create a physical piece for one of our Edge of Elsewhere venues, the expectation is that it lives there as part of the experience and hopefully gets enjoyed by tens of thousands of curious people over the years. The installation, sculpture, prop, or mechanism becomes part of the world guests explore.
We're also happy to discuss any other arrangements that make sense for the work and the project. (e.g. if a piece is being loaned to us, or is placed in the venue with the intention of being sold.)
This applies specifically to projects we contract you to create. We believe that creative work belongs to its creators. That includes code, music, videos, graphics, animation, engineering drawings, schematics, and other digital work - including the digital files used to create any physical art described above.
In exchange, Midnight Mansion receives the right to continue using the work. Specifically, we are granted a perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, and build upon the work within Midnight Mansion and Edge of Elsewhere venues and experiences.
In plain English: we can keep operating, maintaining, modifying, and improving the thing we hired you to create so it continues to function inside our venues and experiences.
Yep, you read that correctly. You're free to reuse the work elsewhere! Put it in your portfolio. Adapt it for another project. Open-source it. Turn it into something new. Sell it to someone else and become a millionaire. Go wild!
The only real guardrail is this: please don't share or reuse anything in a way that creates safety, security, or reputation problems for Midnight Mansion or Edge of Elsewhere. For example, please avoid sharing things like security details, puzzle solutions, or behind-the-scenes information that could disrupt the experience.
The spirit of this policy is simple: We want people to experiment and continue building upon what they've made long after a single project ends, while making sure Edge of Elsewhere can keep operating and evolving the experiences those ideas helped create.
